My First Year at Awesome Con

Story and photo by Madyson Crawford.

This year, I attended the Awesome Con Convention. It was quite the experience for me and I used every second I had to enjoy it. I was scared on my first day because I didn’t know what to expect from everyone in the DMV who loves cosplaying. I’m an anime person, so my first stop was the anime section. Before I found the anime hall, I was wandering around the building for a while trying to explore. I found many people who were dressed up for Awesome Con and their outfits were amazing. Some of the people I met made their outfits, others weren't homemade but people had made their own alterations, which I thought was super cool. It made me think about wearing a costume for next year's Awesome Con.

When I found the anime section, I could not believe how huge it was, but I had fun. I had a lot of G-Fuel, which is a flavored powder that you add to drinks. I did not have a drink so I just ate the dry powder, I ate two packs, and then my teacher took the rest from me. Then we walked around taking some more photos. I found a very interesting stand called Laurel Scare Place with some scary masks and costumes.

Finally, I met some black artists and even bought a book called Showdown from an amazing author called Olaju. He has a big animated series with amazing black characters. I would have to give the book I have a 10/10. When I find this author again I will get another book from him because even though it was a comic book, it really speaks honestly about the things colored people go through, and it speaks highly about black power.

My overall experience at Awesome Con was one I’ll never forget, and I must go again in the future. You should consider going too!
