The Irony of an Assassination: MLK’s Legacy and American Politics
I believe that The Dream has become stronger because of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Regardless of this bold act, people stuck to their dreams. Since the assassination, the laws have changed to allow the American dream for many blacks and other races in this country. Ironically, killing the leader actually helped the followers achieve what they were taught. King’s dream continued in remembrance of him and was passed down through the thoughtful words of this courageous, bold leader.
This dream still lives on today in two presidential candidates—Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. These candidates have chosen to make history and show that not just any black person or woman can be a good president, but anyone may have a chance to change the situations that we face economically, politically and socially. Obama and Clinton are strong and bold enough to become a president because they must have a lot of courage to overcome the obstacles faced by being a black person or a woman.
A female or black president might be harmed or assassinated by jealous, racist or sexist people who are against changing history. History could repeat itself with the assassination of a female president but I believe it’s more likely with a black president. Obama could be assassinated by people who do not want to follow The Dream that King and other righteous people believe in. Earlier in American history, blacks were thought of as inferior and many were killed for this reason. People are still poisoned by this kind of racism and if they see great historical changes such as what is going on currently, then they may try to kill the dream by killing the black president.
The election shows how the dream has changed our lives and how significant it is now just like it was in the past.
