Friendship News Network is proud to present Fading Color: How Gentrification Changed Chocolate City, a documentary about the effects of gentrification on the black community in Washington, DC. Produced by student journalists at Friendship Collegiate Academy, the film documents the causes, the pros and cons and most importantly a look at how developers, DC council members and community activists are working together to create real solutions.
It all started three years ago, when student reporters and their advisor, Flonora Merritt began asking what could be done to stop their neighbors from leaving DC. They interviewed long-time community members, neighbors who were forced to leave, politicians, developers and activists. When the pandemic set in and they couldn’t go to school to edit the film, the DC Humanities Council stepped in with a very generous grant to help them finish.
Fading Color is an authentic look from the inside, produced by young black filmmakers whose goal is to gain a seat at the table as agents of positive change in Washington, DC.
