JAN. 7, 2020: 12/18/2019 As the year came to an end and winter break gets near, the FPCS Blow Pierce Campus hosted a spirit week to spread the holiday cheer! One of the spirit weekdays was titled “Winter White Wednesday”. On this day, students, teachers, and staff wore all-white or mostly white and participated in a snowball fight. You may be thinking, “How are they going to have a snowball fight and it has not been snowing?” Well, you’re right! So, here is how the creative students, teachers, and staff members at FPCS Blow Pierce pulled this off...
During the students’ morning meeting, students and teachers discussed the daily agenda, the weather, and the question of the day. The question of the day was, “How can we have a snowball fight if it is not snowing?” Students listed ways to have a snowball fight and materials they could use to have a snowball fight. The list had responses like
-play pretend
-make your own snow
-use white popcorn
-use marshmallows because they won’t hurt
-use paper balls
-lay down and make snow angels
-make snowflakes
-wear hats and gloves
-use cotton balls
-use ice
-use water
-use candy
-use toilet tissue
-use something white
-wait until it snows
Using this list, teachers helped students to narrow down their options by thinking about materials that would be safe, and materials they actually had in the class, and what ideas were the most reasonable. In the end, students balled paper into mini snowballs and teachers put packing tape around the snowballs to give them some weight. Together, they filled a crate with snowballs and headed to the school’s gym for a snowball fight!
Before the snowball fight, the students read, “A Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats. At the end of the read aloud, the teachers explained the rules, passed out snowballs for starters, turned on a snow machine and yelled, “SNOWBALL FIGHT!” The rest is history! The students and teachers all enjoyed themselves. The snowball fight was a good and memorable part of spirit week.
Happy Holidays everyone! Stay warm.
