My Day as a Woodridge Student

Story and photo by Paris Dozier.

I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to be a student at another school. What do they eat? What work are they doing? And most importantly, what are they doing right now? So, I’ve decided to let you all in on just that, but from the perspective of a Woodridge student.

7:45 - 8:45 AM: Social Emotional Learning - I’m going to be honest, I don’t normally get to school until about 8:00, so I really couldn’t tell you what happens in the first twenty-two-ish minutes of school. Social Emotional Learning is the class we take to gain knowledge about ourselves. We learn about how our minds work in our young adolescence and how we can be more considerate of others. This is part of what’s called Sister Circle and Brotherhood. Now, I use this time to go visit Ms. Dudley and Ms.Griswold to wish them well during their day. It’s a nice way to ease into the school day.

8:45 - 10:15 AM: Math - Math is kind of hard. I feel like I’ve spent a portion of my academic career trying to be comfortable in what I was learning.  And I’ve felt that I’m not quite challenged all the time (or so I’ve heard from my mother). However, math this year is challenging… not an overwhelming amount, but just enough that I’m constantly aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I guess that feeling that assignments are harder probably comes with the territory of getting older.

10:15 - 11:00 AM: Science - Science is kind of hit or miss to me. Sometimes I’m really intrigued by our lesson. Other times I just can’t get into it. We’re currently learning about human biology and how the human body works, which is pretty cool. It’s really interesting to think about all the parts of the human body that actually make me, me.

11:00 - 11:45: Specials - We have different special classes every day so it really depends. I enjoy music class a lot, it’s a very laid back atmosphere (as are some other classes). Specials are always pretty nice.

11:45 - 12:25: Lunch/Recess - Always great. Due to Covid restrictions I don’t actually change classrooms throughout the day so it’s a nice change of pace/scenery. I also have an opportunity to see my friends from other classes at recess and catch up with them.

12:30 - 2:00: ELA - I love reading and writing so it comes as no surprise that I love ELA. I find that I have a lot in common with my ELA teacher which honestly makes the class that much more enjoyable. And, ELA signals that my day is halfway over and I’ll be home soon but that’s not always a positive nor a negative.

2:00 - 2:45: Intervention - Intervention is a very flexible class. Sometimes it acts as a study hally period in which we work on missing assignments. Sometimes we expand on skills we’re learning in ELA and math. Sometimes we do something differently entirely! I always look forward to it, though.

2:45 - 3:30: Social Studies - Last but not least, there’s Social Studies. Social Studies is a course I’ve always loved because it’s intriguing. We can learn about what our ancestors did to get us a chance to learn at this magnificent school. Not only that, our teacher seems to have a shared understanding of the fact that nobody wants to stay overtime at school and always makes sure we get out of school on time. It’s great.

Since the beginning of the school year, I’ve always considered my class schedule to be perfect. The way my classes are spaced with some of my favorite subjects at the end to help me get through the day is something that I’m really grateful for. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that a day in the life of a Woodridge student is pretty great.
