Are Break Packets Really Needed?

JAN. 21, 2020: Have you ever had a break packet? During long or short breaks from school, most students receive them. On average these packets for a week off of school are about 4 pages per each core subject. According to the Los Angeles Times, each packet takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete, and only about 75% of children complete them. The New York Times states that these packets are only effective for about 75% of children. To be honest, most children do not complete these packets.
To find out what students and teachers think about break packets, I asked a couple of questions around my school and community.
Eliana: Do students need a break packet and do you complete break packets?
Justin Dyson, 7th grade scholar: They are unnecessary because unless students are in critical learning conditions they don’t need them. Personally I don't need them because I have memorized everything that I need to know for next year. If I were a teacher I would only give any students with under a D a packet, and this would push students more.
Athens Parker, English teacher: As a teacher, I do understand the importance of students having packets. When students get packets, they can reinforce what they have been learning. By having the packet they most likely would not forget what they learned in that time period. However, as a former student, I do understand the importance of a brain break.
Tairyn Walker, 7th grade scholar: I say yes and no. I say “yes” because I feel that students need to work to keep their brain fresh. I say “no” because students deserve a break to take time out with their family.
Christopher Graham, Assistant Dean of Students: Yes, the students need the packets. They need to continue practicing their craft over breaks.
Rosanna Batista, Spanish teacher: It depends on the student and how they behave in class. If they behave, they can get a short and sweet packet. On the other hand, if they act up, they are probably missing class time and need extra practice.
In conclusion, people are divided when it comes to their opinion about break packets. Personally, I think that they can be helpful to those who need them but useless to those who don’t. Everyone deserves a break once in a while.
