FPCSO Students Visit the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

Some of my classmates at Friendship Public Charter School Online (FPCSO) recently visited the Museum of Natural History to study the natural world.  We attended this field trip, which was open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, with our learning coaches.  We usually greet each other in our virtual classrooms for class connect, but on this day we got to see each other at the museum.  We were so excited to see each other in person, and to learn more about our natural world.  We have been studying science topics including habitats, plants, animals, geography, rocks and minerals, fossils, and geological time.  The museum exhibits included all of those topics.  We also saw the 2016 winners of the Nature’s Best Photography Awards which has a youth category and inspired the students to always strive for success.

We all got our tickets to see the butterfly exhibit, and while waiting headed out to see the Hope Diamond in The Harry Winston Gallery.  It was amazing! There are so many incredible gems and jewelry pieces there. We saw gems belonging to Marie Antoinette and Napoleon’s second wife, which we studied in history. My favorite is the Carmen Lucia Ruby, my birthstone. I would love to wear that ring! My homeroom teacher, Mrs. Conway, encouraged me to write a report about that ring.  I might!

Our visit concluded with a tour of the butterfly exhibit – a walk-through living butterfly habitat – where we had the opportunity to see hundreds of butterflies from around the world.  All in all, it was a great day for students in the District’s only virtual public charter school!
