Reading Across America Day at Woodridge

On Friday, March 3, 2017, Woodridge celebrated Read Across America Day. The day was filled with so many activities in classrooms throughout the school. Staff members from the Community Office came out to read some of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. Ms. Patricia Brantley, Friendship CEO, and Mr. Donald Hense, Friendship Chairman, brought laughter and excitement to the 1st and 3rd grade classrooms. Dr. Seuss’s famous book Green Eggs and Ham was read aloud and breakfast was served for the elementary grades. To go along with Dr. Seuss’ book, the cafeteria prepared a special breakfast of “green eggs” and ham. The students really enjoyed all of the visits.

Local celebrities Allison Seymour and Tucker Barnes from FOX 5 news, came out to read and talk to many of the classes about the importance of reading and sharing some of their favorite stories. Another local celebrity who stopped by to join in Reading Across America Day was radio DJ “Shorty Da Prince” from 93.9 WKYS and Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. The day was filled with nothing but books, books, and more books.

Reading Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, schools plan activities to celebrate reading and storytelling.

Trinity Horton and Janiya Riveria are 5th grade scholars at Friendship Woodridge Academy.
