Woodridge New Sewing Club One Stitch at a Time
Story and photos by Janiya Rivera.
APRIL 4, 2017: Just in time for spring, Woodridge has a brand new after-school club that has everyone excited. The Woodridge Sewing Club takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 pm to 6 pm. Ms. Waller, the mother of 4th grader Angel Waller, volunteers as the coordinator. Students in grades 4 through 8 are already making things. So far they have made denim purses, skirts, and now tops. All of the patterns are very simple, but the actual sewing machine is a little complicated. You have to be able to have a steady pace in order to make a straight line. The new sewing club is a place where students can gather together and learn how to sew. Students are taught how to fill a bobbin, thread a sewing machine, thread a needle, and use it to create handmade items. Ms. Waller allows everyone to choose what they want to make, and take it home to keep when they are done. The sewing club is planning to put on a fashion show to showcase their work one stitch at a time.
