Fenty Goes, Vincent Wins
September 13, 2010. On September 10 and 13, students at five Friendship Public Charter Schools (Chamberlain, Blow Pierce, Southeast Academy Woodridge and Collegiate) participated in a mock election to vote for the next mayor of Washington DC. Young adults and children who did not meet the voting age requirement voiced their opinions. Vincent Gray won a major landslide in the election with 374 votes—overpowering Fenty's 108 votes.
Briana Crawford, a freshman at Collegiate Academy, stated "Gray, he will make a change in the community and things will get better". She was not the only one with that opinion either. Another Collegiate sophomore announced, "Vincent Gray was an excellent chairman". Another student stood up for rival Fenty stating, "Fenty basically changed the world".
The runners up were mayoral candidates Ernest Johnson with 6 votes, Leo Alexander with 8 votes, Sulimon Brown with 5 votes, Blow Pierce teacher Ms. Chapelle with 1 vote and famous rapper Eminem (evidently a role model to one of the children).
As we get closer and closer to the mayoral election Tuesday September 14, 2010 opinions on who should be elected mayor continue to be the talk of the town and in Friendship School's case—the talk of the school hallways. Students based their votes on who they trusted more—Vincent Gray or Adrian Fenty. Later this week we'll have videos with comments from Friendship students.
Will Washington DC have the former mayor who we have grown accustomed to—or Vincent Gray and his new ideas and promises? I guess we will see on Tuesday September 14, 2010.
