4th Graders are Buzzing Over an Electrical Circuit

MARCH 7, 2018: Today at Woodridge, students acted as if they were electrical engineers by making a representation of a circuit. There was so much buzz going on in Ms. Lewis’ 4th grade science classroom. The electrical circuit was the topic of the lesson and students reviewed the concepts of a closed circuit, an open circuit, and a short circuit. Ms. Lewis provided several materials: light bulbs, cell batteries, aluminum foil, construction paper, and drawing utensils. The goal was for students to build a circuit with a light that comes on.

This activity sparked excitement and curiosity. There wasn’t one person in the room who didn’t participate. Just for one day, not only did these fourth graders pretend to be scientists, but they communicated like scientists too by asking several “What if” questions. This is really a day where everyone was enthusiastic about learning—from the teacher to the students. I guess electrical engineering can be fun!
