MAR. 18, 2020: On Friday, March 13, 2020, Mayor Bowser declared a State of Emergency for DC which caused schools in DC to close until April 1, 2020. But, in DC—especially low-income areas like Wards 7 and 8, many students rely on meals provided at school. Because of that, many DC  public schools, charter schools, and DC restaurants have recognized the need to provide FREE meals so that students are able to eat while they’re out of school during the next few weeks.

During this time, DC Public Schools will be providing meals for all students every weekday from Monday, March 16 -Tuesday, March 31 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at various locations:

  • Anacostia High School, 1601 16th Street SE

  • Ballou High School, 3401 4th Street SE

  • Banneker High School, 800 Euclid Street NW

  • Brookland Middle School, 1150 Michigan Avenue NE

  • Cardozo Education Campus, 1200 Clifton Street NW

  • Columbia Heights Education Campus, 3101 16th Street NW

  • Coolidge High School, 6315 5th Street NW

  • Eastern High School, 1700 East Capitol Street NE

  • Jefferson Middle School, 801 7th Street SW

  • Kelly Miller Middle School, 301 49th Street NE

  • Kimball Elementary School, 3375 Minnesota Avenue SE

  • LaSalle-Backus Education Campus, 501 Riggs Road NE

  • McKinley Education Campus, 151 T Street NE

  • Stanton Elementary School, 2701 Naylor Road SE

  • Walker-Jones Education Campus, 1125 New Jersey Avenue NW

  • Woodson High School, 540 55th Street NE

All Friendship Public Charter School campuses will also be providing “Grab and Go Meals” during the week from 8:30 am - 11:30 am for their students.

And there are restaurants who will offer kids to have FREE meals during the schools’ closures such as Good Stuff Eatery, We the Pizza, Santa Rosa, and Little Miner Taco.

Even though it is a great thing that these restaurants are being proactive during this situation, many of the restaurants that offer students free meals are not in the locations in which students need them the most. I hope other restaurants that are closer to low-income neighborhoods like Wards 7 and 8 follow behind so that the students can have access to food during this time of need. Luckily DCPS and Friendship will have several schools open to offer free meals in low-income neighborhoods.
