A Wrinkle in Time Ranks #1 For Woodridge Girls

APRIL 18, 2018: Woodridge Girls Rock! In honor of Women in History Month, forty-five girls were selected by their teachers to see the movie, A Wrinkle in Time along with our principal Felicia Owo. This happened because of donated tickets to more than 12,000 students nationwide. Friendship Woodridge and Chamberlain campuses were both selected to see the movie at the AMC Loews Georgetown theatre as a culminating event for their book club. All of the students are reading the book and thought that it would be great see how close the movie follows the book.
The movie is about a girl of color who wears glasses and conquers the darkness. The movie is directed by Ava DuVernay, an African American filmmaker. The movie is based on the novel by Madeleine L’Engle and stars Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon. It is a great movie for kids!
The main character, Meg, is a girl in high school who feels like she doesn’t fit in and often questions authority figures. She is involved in several fights with her peers and is sent to the principal’s office for her misbehavior.
Later she makes a journey into space by “tessering” in a tesseract. Meg must learn to overcome and to be happy with who she is. There is a theme of good versus evil in the story and the characters represent both good and evil. The “good” characters are Meg, her family, Aunt Beast, and the Happy Medium. The “evil” characters include IT, The Dark Thing, and the Man with the Red Eyes. All of the characters to me had crazy names which made them so unique and different.
I could totally relate to this movie. I could see myself so many times going through some of the same situations the characters encountered. I think this movie could be for adults as well because everyone can learn from the lessons and apply them to their lives. This movie teaches us about the world we live in. No matter your culture, race, or religion, this movie is beautiful and powerful to see. Girls all around the world are loving this movie--especially the ones at Woodridge.
