APRIL 17, 2018: On Monday, March 26, 2018, Tech Prep reporters and our advisor, Ms. Sabina Powell, had the opportunity to execute a student-planned trip to Harlem, New York City. We went to the Apollo Theater, had lunch at Sylvia’s and experienced Harlem overall.
At the Apollo Theater, we were part of a mock “Amateur Night”. One of our reporters C’Erra Andrews went on the stage and sung “Better Days” by Le'Andria Johnson. We also were able to see some of the original dressing rooms and some of the more modern dressing rooms. And, we were able to view the famous “Wall of Signatures” that celebrities sign when they perform at the Apollo.
After visiting the Apollo, we had a wonderful lunch at Sylvia’s, an African-American owned Soul Food restaurant. Sylvia’s is one of the best restaurants that I have experienced. I ordered “Sylvia’s Famous Chicken and Waffles”. The food is so good, that they even sell it in grocery stores.
We weren’t able to do much because of time, but we still had a lot of fun. Everyone enjoyed spending time with one of our favorite teachers and some of our favorite friends. There was nothing but laughs, fun, and learning about some of the African-American culture in New York. We can’t wait until our next trip!
