NOV. 25, 2019: Have you ever wondered what happened to the descendants of Harriet Tubman? Well, look no further - two of Harriet Tubman’s descendants are here at Friendship Woodridge! One of her great-nieces is Maddison Lewis, she is in the seventh grade and the other great-niece is Mackenzie Lewis, who is in the fourth grade. Both girls are well educated and have great futures ahead of them.

The movie Harriet Tubman is directed by Kari Lemmons, she is an African American woman who has directed many other movies such as ” Eve’s Bayous “ and “ Black Nativity “. Both movies are very successful in the film industry. “ Eve Bayous ” produced over $14,000,000 and “ Black Nativity “ produced over $7,000,000 worldwide.

This is one of the many reasons why the movie Harriet is so important to the black community. It educates us about our history. The movie gives us a different perspective of violence, and Lemmons talks about the kind of violence that separates us from our families. Harriet Tubman was motivated by that family separation.

Woodridge scholars are more fortunate to have a real family connection to our history unlike other scholars around the country. Scholars at Woodridge can use this connection to learn more about Harriet Tubman and have a first-hand account. At Woodridge we have true ” History in the Flesh”!

Chloe Brooks is a 6th grade scholar at Friendship Woodridge International School.
