On Sunday April 2, 2023, history was made. Louisiana State University's girls basketball team won their first ever National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) National Championship. No one thought they could do it, but they were wrong. The final score was 102-85, against number 2 ranked Iowa. Big stars like Angel Reese and Flau'jae Johnson helped lead their team to victory.
While this was an exciting win for LSU, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the game. Many fans claimed the game was rigged, and that the referees were making calls serious enough to put the game in one team's favor. The biggest controversy came from Angel Reese’s trash talk to Iowa star Caitlin Clark. In the final moments of the game, Reese did the infamous “you can’t see me” move, and pointed to her ring finger while staring at Clark. This was to indicate that she was about to win the championship, and not Clark. Many critics called Reese unclassy, and said she was demonstrating poor sportsmanship by doing this. Reese isn’t new to criticism, which is why after the win she said, “What they gon’ say now?”
However prior to Sunday’s championship final, when Iowa played Louisville, Clark did the same “you can’t see me” gesture that Reese did. The only difference is, Clark was praised for her taunting, while Reese was criticized. Many argue that this was because Reese is a black woman that won’t fit in the box society is trying to place her in.
The game was definitely a good one. Both teams played hard and at their best, but LSU came on top.
