Woodridge Has First Safety Patrol Induction

DEC. 11, 2019: On Wednesday, November 25, Friendship Woodridge International had its first Safety Patrol Induction thanks to Officer Lake. At the induction, students learned the role of an officer. We learned the history of Safety Patrol. Finally, new members said a pledge. Then they were officially inducted to Safety Patrol, with the duty of protecting classmates.

Safety Patrols in schools have existed for a long time. Nationally, the official School Safety Patrol Program started in 1920 after the creation of cars. Members of Safety Patrol cannot direct traffic but do assist with a street crossing. At first, only boys were able to participate in the program, but later, girls were also allowed to join. The program created to help younger kids cross the street and get to school safely. The program spread quickly and was adopted in more than two dozen countries.

As a member of the first-ever group of Woodridge Safety Patrol officers, I think Safety Patrol is a remarkable program that can help kids be safe. As Safety Patrol members, we are in charge of others' lives. If we do not pay attention, we are putting kids' lives in danger. The program also has designated places for students to post up, such as standing outside or late pick up, which helps us meet new people and be a part of the community.
