A Day at Fantom Comics

On September 29, 2024, half of the FNN crew embarked on a much-anticipated field trip to Fantom Comics in Dupont Circle. The day was bright, crisp, and perfect for an adventure in the city's heart. Chatter filled the air as we boarded the train, and our excitement was palatable. We were about to meet the acclaimed author and illustrator Tony Weaver Jr., whose graphic novels had captivated our imaginations for years.
Upon our arrival at Fandom Comics, the vibrant storefront greeted us, adorned with a colorful comic book cover that promised worlds of adventures and creativity. As we stepped inside, the scent of fresh paper and ink surrounded us, making our hearts race. The store was a treasured trove, with shelves overflowing with comics, graphic novels, and merchandise. We could barely contain our enthusiasm as we wandered through the aisles, flipping through pages and discussing our favorite characters.
After the store owner's brief introduction, we settled into a cozy corner, where Tony Weaver Jr. would soon join us. The room was excited as we shared our favorite stories and characters, eager to hear from the man behind the magic.
When Tony arrived, his energy filled the room. He greeted us with a warm smile, and his passion for storytelling was evident from the start. He spoke about his journey as an artist and writer and also shared how he found his inspiration in his own experiences and the world around him. We learned about the challenges of creating comics and the joy that comes with bringing characters to life.
During the Q&A session, our hands shot up with excitement. Tony patiently answered our questions, which ranged from the technical aspects of drawing to the emotional depth of storytelling. One student asked how he created such relatable characters, and he replied, “I think everyone has a story to tell, but it’s all about finding those little moments of truth in our lives.”
When the event was getting to a close, we each had the chance to get our books signed. When my turn came, I was very nervous to approach him, clutching my beloved graphic novel. I said, “Thank you for inspiring us.” Tony smiled and encouraged everyone to keep writing their own stories.
With the signed books in our hands, and our minds buzzing with creativity, we left Fantom Comics, each of us feeling a little bit more inspired to tell our tales. The train ride back to school was filled with laughter and discussions about our favorite moments from the day. If it wasn’t for our wonderful teacher, Ms. Merritt, we wouldn’t have met an incredible author or learned that storytelling is a powerful way to connect with others.
Reflecting on that day, I realize how special it was to be surrounded by my friends, art, and the magic of stories. Meeting Tony Weaver Jr. was more than just a field trip, it was a reminder that everyone has a story worth sharing.
